Expressions of interest are being sought from suitably qualified persons wishing to be considered for appointment as the Chief Executive of Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand.

Legislation currently before Parliament will create a new regulator to take over the role of the Firearms Safety Authority - Te Tari Pūreke.

The new agency is expected to become operational in late 2026, subject to legislation passing. It will be an autonomous agency, hosted within NZ Police.

The new regulator has community safety as its focus while providing simpler, smarter services for firearms users.

It will have four key objectives:

- encouraging a culture of community safety and supporting compliance;
- enabling lawful possession and use of firearms;
- improving education about compliance; and
- maintaining public safety.

Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand will be led by a Chief Executive who will be responsible for the firearms licensing system, monitoring and enforcing compliance, maintaining the Firearms Registry, and promoting firearms safety and educating the public.

The Ministry of Justice is handling the recruitment process. It is now inviting Expressions of Interest for the role.
