Your legal obligations as a firearms licence holder

As a New Zealand firearms licence holder, you have a legal obligation to notify Te Tari Pūreke if your circumstances have changed since getting your firearms licence.

What changes of circumstance you must notify us about

 A change of circumstance can include things like: 

  • change of address - residential or postal
  • change of registered health practitioner or their contact details.

In order to meet your obligations as a New Zealand firearms licence holder, if you experience any of the above changes in circumstance, you must notify Te Tari Pūreke within 30 days of the change taking place.

How to notify Te Tari Pūreke of a change of address

Note: If you hold an endorsement on your firearms licence and are intending to change address, you need to notify us in advance about what arrangements you have made for the safe custody of any pistol, prohibited item, prohibited magazine, or restricted weapon during your shift to the new address. To notify us before you move, log in to MyFirearms, phone, or use the Change of Address form, as above.

How to notify Te Tari Pūreke of a change of health practitioner

Your change of circumstance details will be updated in MyFirearms by a staff member. Provided you have validated your account, you should see the changes reflected after we have taken the appropriate steps involved and updated your account.

Providing information for the Firearms Registry

If you held a firearms licence at 24 June 2023, you're required to provide information for the Registry the first time an activating circumstance happens. Activating circumstances include notifying us of a change of address.
