Providing information for the Firearms Registry

If you held a firearms licence at 24 June 2023, you're required to provide information for the Registry the first time an activating circumstance happens. Activating circumstances include applying for an endorsement.

How endorsements work

An endorsement on your firearms licence means you are eligible to apply for a permit to possess or import certain types of arms items – pistols, pistol carbine conversion kits (PCCKs), restricted weapons, prohibited firearms or prohibited magazines.

Bona fide collector endorsement

You must have an endorsement to collect pistols, restricted weapons, prohibited firearms, and prohibited magazines.

Dealer employee endorsement

You must have an endorsement if you work for a licensed firearms dealer and your job requires you to handle certain items.

Memento or heirloom endorsement

You must have an endorsement if you want to keep a pistol, restricted weapon, prohibited firearm or prohibited magazine that has special significance to you.

Pest control endorsement

You must have an endorsement to use prohibited firearms and prohibited magazines for pest control work.

Pistol target shooting endorsement

You must have an endorsement to use pistols for target shooting in New Zealand.
