A temporary non-pistol shooting range is defined in section 38A. It is defined as a non-pistol shooting range that is set up temporarily for no more than 2 shooting events in any calendar year for a duration of no more than four days for each event.

The following persons may operate a temporary non-pistol shooting range:

• a shooting club:
• a member of a shooting club:
• an operator of:
  • a pistol shooting range that is certified under section 38V.
  • a non-pistol shooting range that is enrolled under section 38XH.

The operator of a temporary non-pistol shooting range must notify the Commissioner of the range operating ahead of the time it will operate. This must be done at least 1 week prior to the beginning of the shooting event for which the temporary range is being set up (regulations 28GZZB and 28GZZC).

The notice must be delivered to the Commissioner of Police by the operator either in hard copy form or electronically. 

The notice of operation must state: 

• the name and contact details of the temporary non-pistol range operator; and
• the firearms licence number of the temporary non-pistol shooting range operator, if the range operator is an individual; and
• the location of the temporary non-pistol shooting range;
• the dates of the shooting events;
• the shooting discipline(s) to be conducted on the temporary non-pistol shooting range;
• the types of firearms and the maximum calibre to be used at the temporary non-pistol shooting range.

The follow information is required to support the notice:

• a copy of the range standing orders being used for the temporary non-pistol shooting range
• evidence that the range standing orders have been approved by the association the range is affiliated with, or the Police.

The operator of the temporary non-pistol shooting range must sign the notice or use and electronic identity credential.
