You can use the Firearms Licence Checker when selling firearms or ammunition to check whether the person you are selling to has a valid firearms licence.

How to use the Firearms Licence Checker

1. Open the link on your laptop, PC or mobile device.

2. Complete the required fields in the Seller Details section.

IF: "Licence validation successful" pop up message displays (a caution alert displays)

THEN: proceed to Buyer Details (step 3). verify the details you have entered. If you are still receiving a caution alert, you won’t be able to proceed to the next step in the tool.  Contact Police for further assistance, or email

3. Complete the required fields in the Buyer Details section using the firearms licence card presented by the buyer.

IF: "Licence validation successful" pop up message displays (“Could not validate buyer licence” alert displays)

THEN: it is safe to proceed with the sale. Check you have entered the buyer’s details correctly. If you are still receiving the caution alert, then the buyer may not have a valid licence and you should not proceed with the sale.

Use the Firearms Licence Checker for proof of ID

Firearms Licence Checker can also be used by businesses that have customers who use firearms licence cards as proof of identification (e.g. banks, airlines and other businesses).

To validate an ID using the Firearms Licence Checker, you’ll only need to complete the first section (steps 1 and 2) by inputting details from the customer’s firearms licence in the Seller Details section.
