Firearms Registry requirements apply from 24 June 2023
The first time you apply for a licence or endorsement from 24 June 2023, you must register all arms items in your possession within 30 days.

Endorsements relating to pistols, restricted weapons, prohibited weapons, prohibited firearms and magazines.

 

Pistol target shooting: Application for an endorsement to possess pistols for target pistol shooting
Applicants must be or become a member of a pistol club recognised by the Commissioner of Police.

Supporting club and national body form
Clubs must fill out this form and send it to the national body to support an individual’s application to possess pistols for target pistol shooting.

Bona fide collector: Application for an endorsement as a bona fide collector to possess pistols, restricted weapons, prohibited firearms and prohibited magazines.
Required by firearms licence holder to possess pistols, restricted weapons, prohibited firearms and prohibited magazines as a bona fide collector.

Broadcaster/theatrical: Application for an endorsement to possess pistols, restricted weapons, prohibited firearms and prohibited magazines for the purposes of film or theatre productions. Required by a dealer's licence holder wishing to possess pistols, restricted weapons, prohibited firearms and prohibited magazines for the purpose of film or theatre productions.

Dealer employee: Application for an endorsement as a dealer or dealer employee to possess pistols, restricted weapons, prohibited firearms and prohibited magazines. Required by a dealer employee to handle pistols, restricted weapons, prohibited firearms and prohibited magazines possessed by the dealer as part of business activities.

Heirloom/Memento: Application for an endorsement to possess pistols, restricted weapons, prohibited firearms and prohibited magazines as an heirloom or memento. Required by a firearms licence holder wishing to possess pistols, restricted weapons, prohibited firearms and prohibited magazines as heirloom or memento. Applicants must already hold New Zealand firearms licence.

Endorsements relating to prohibited items and pest control
 
Required by anyone who wants to import, manufacture, sell, supply, possess, or use prohibited items for the purposes of pest control. See Apply for an endorsement for more information.

 

Pest control ownership endorsement
Endorsement to possess and use prohibited firearms in a recognised pest control business.

Owner or manager of agricultural, horticultural or silvicultural business pest control endorsement
Endorsement to possess and use prohibited firearms in a recognised agricultural, horticultural or silvicultural business for the purposes of pest control on rural land.

Employee of agricultural, horticultural or silvicultural business pest control endorsement

Endorsement to possess and use prohibited firearms as an employee in a recognised agricultural, horticultural or silvicultural business, for the purposes of pest control on rural land as required by the employer and /or manager.

Includes employees required to manage use and ongoing possession and security of firearms away from the business’ main storage location.

How to apply with downloaded PDF forms

Firearms licence, dealer licence, and all endorsement applications

To complete a downloaded PDF form, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your laptop, tablet, or mobile.

If you do not have Acrobat Reader, download and install it from the Adobe website

  1. Complete the forms.
    1. Open the application form and save it on your laptop, tablet, or mobile, before you start to enter answers on it.
    2. Enter your answers on the form with care. An incomplete form takes Te Tari Pūreke longer to reply to.
    3. Save your work as you go, and when you’ve completed the form.
    4. If you are applying for endorsements on your firearms licence at the same time as the licence, repeat these steps for their application forms.
  2. Pay the fees.
    1. You need to find a NZ Post Shop local to you that offers the 'pay a bill' service. Post Centres do not accept payments. Find a NZ Post Shop
    2. When you make the payment, you need to tell Post Shop staff:
      • the licence you're applying for
      • if you are applying for endorsements on your firearms licence
      • the amounts you must pay for each
    3. Pay for your licence and endorsement applications.
    4. Keep the receipts.
  3. Prepare your supporting documents.
    1. Check you have scanned copies or digital photos of your supporting documents ready to upload.
  4. Review and submit the application forms
    1. Check you have completed the application forms.
    2. Click ‘Upload application documents’ and follow the guidance.


Endorsement to firearms licence applications only

When you apply for an endorsement to your firearms licence, with your endorsement application form you must submit a firearms licence application form.

To submit your endorsement and firearms licence application forms at the same time, select the endorsement option on the firearms forms upload page

If you already have a firearms licence and are applying for a specific endorsement for the first time, your application must include:

  • endorsement application form
  • receipt for the endorsement application fee
  • firearms licence application form with only sections A, E, F, G, L, and N completed

You do not need to pay a firearms licence application fee.

You do not need to include:

  • receipt for a firearms licence application fee
  • passport-style photo
  • identity documents and proof of address

If you do not have a current firearms licence, your endorsement application must contain:

  • endorsement application form
  • receipt for the endorsement application fee
  • firearms licence application form, completed in full
  • receipt for the firearms licence application fee
  • passport-style photo
  • identity documents and proof of home address
