Vincent Street burglary public notice

Attention all firearms licence holders in the Auckland City Police District

On 25 May, Auckland police discovered that the former Auckland Central Police Station on Vincent Street was burgled.
Some Police documents were stolen and subsequently recovered. The recovered documents include firearms licensing information. A detailed examination of the recovered documents is under way and Police is currently contacting potentially impacted firearm licence holders. We are advising them of this breach and that the documents have been recovered. Documents contain names, addresses, and other details of firearms licence holders.

Those potentially affected, are people who have had dealings with the Auckland City District Arms Office. The time period covered appears to be from 2003 to 2018.

Police continue to encourage anyone who has any concerns or questions to contact us to discuss these.
Police undertake daily monitoring of incidents involving firearms licence holders, which includes theft or burglary reports. We encourage all firearms owners to be vigilant about their security arrangements for their firearms.

Police are extremely disappointed this has happened. The public can be assured an investigation is currently under way into how this occurred. Three individuals have been charged and are before the courts.
The protection of people’s private information is paramount for Police and we are taking this matter extremely seriously. The Privacy Commissioner has been notified of the breach.

Any potentially affected individual has the right to make a complaint to the Privacy Commissioner about the privacy breach.
